Jean Michel, Stefano and Ron joined me this morning for an interesting day of fishing. We hit the water early with the conditions flat calm, but I knew it wouldn’t last!
We grinded it out for several hours, but only picked at the fish under these conditions. Eventually however, the wind started to blow and the action soon changed. We had a number of pike & walleye eat our baits but with the water temps still on the cool side, their aggressiveness wasn’t high. It took until the afternoon for them to finally begin to wake up, but unfortunately the pleasure boats did too!
The best fishing was had in the latter part of the day with frequent reels firing and more fish coming aboard. Everyone had many chances at fish but Stefano managed the catch of the day with a nice bonus musky! As it turned out, this was also his first one too! He was in awe of its size and power but pics weren’t to be as I informed him that the season was still closed. It didn’t matter as he had the memory!
With the afternoon sunshine and heat, I think every boat within 50 miles was on the water! This made trolling a little more difficult as there were boats in every direction. Add to that the big waves from the SW at 25 to 50 winds and it wasn’t easy. I somehow managed to make it work though and they boated fish right until the end. I knew the ride back would be a little rough and took my time prepping everything for the run.
Once back at the docks, it was a shit show as usual, being the weekend! There were people & boats everywhere and the parking lot was an absolute nightmare! So much for designated trailer parking after June 1st as cars were pretty much parked in every slot, where the trailers should be. They definitely need more security doing their jobs & policing the parking lot! What do we pay for?
Today was a good day with plenty of action, but still not the easy days that I am accustomed to seeing at this time of year. With temps on the rise, it shouldn’t be long before the high numbers are the norm for a day of fishing. Hopefully the winds will give us a break, so that I can raise the roof on another scorcher of a day! Pretty soon I hope!
All Smiles on Deckjuin 5, 2021
Josh and his son Benjamin fished with me this morning, on not so calm waters. Running to our first location was a little bumpy to say the least! Although the fishing was a bit slower than I had hoped for, we did manage to land many pike in the short time we were out. Well, Ben did most of the landing as his dad let him reel in almost all the fish! He even managed to boat his very first walleye ever that they planned on having for dinner. All in all a good but short day!
Cold Water Adjustmentsjuin 3, 2021
Michele, Alex and Dwayne were with me today, eager to catch a few fish. What they didn’t know was that it was going to be the best day of fishing, they had ever experienced!
Michele & Alex started the trip without Dwayne, but he was scheduled to join them before noon. More fish for them I guess! With just the three of us, we ran to our first spot and I dropped the rods in for a little troll.
We had covered plenty of water with only one walleye to show for our efforts and even that fish didn’t make the reel fire! I had done a check and noticed it pinned to the hooks, so Michele got to land the first fish of the day before I made a few drastic location changes. From this point on, it was lights out for the fish!
Both Michel & Alex spent the next several hours landing fish after fish. A mix of walleye & pike were boated every few minutes and they even had several doubles in the mix! Too bad it had to all come to an end as we headed back to the ramp to pick up Dwayne before 11:30.
A quick bathroom break and a turnaround saw us racing across nearly flat calm waters to return to where we had left off. Would they still be there and would they still be biting? This was the question!
I had decided to try an adjacent area in hopes of more active fish and it didn’t take long. A couple of minutes after setting the lines, we had a reel fire and Dwayne was tight to a good pike. Unfortunately the second reel took a lot longer to go off and disappointment was had, because so did the fish! In fact the next couple of bites all came off before we could get them into the net. These fish were short striking the lures with the cold water and a reduction of speed was needed to even get them somewhat interested.
After struggling for over an hour with inactive fish, I decided to try something different and their luck really changed. From this point on, I managed to get them into plenty more fish. We had a couple of double headers and many, many singles. A small change in presentations was all that was required to fire the fish up! The afternoon turned out to be almost as good as the morning as the time passed by. They were even able to add a few more walleye to the tank giving them a good limit to bring home. As always, several overs were returned too!
Today turned out to be a success by making a few adjustments. With the water temps much colder than I’d like, slowing down allowed the fish to move on the baits much better. Location changes were also needed as the fish weren’t everywhere like they should be at this time of year. In the end, the day was a success! Everyone had a great time and for once, the weather was perfect as well. None of us could have asked for anything more!
More Cold North Windsmai 31, 2021
Sam and his son Sam junior were joined by his dad today, for a shorter than usual outing. We began late and ended early! We were trolling before 9:30 and the cold front conditions had the fish in a lock down mood. I had to cover plenty of water in order to get the bites we did! The only two walleye bites we had both came off, not long after the hook up. In the end, Sam junior fought all of the fish and managed double digits in pike. When will the water warm up?
Major Cold Frontmai 27, 2021
Yesterday’s heat wave and hurricane like winds had me postponing the day! Unfortunately today wasn’t much better with a major cold front and big north winds. Young, Cindy & Rob experienced a tougher than usual bite but they did managed to get into a bunch of good northerns. The walleye unfortunately were either over, or under! One giant perch and a smallie to end the day and we were done! I can’t wait for the weather to warm back up so the water can also do the same. These fish don’t know if they are coming or going!
