The First Holiday

John & Bruce joined me today but we had to use an alternate boat ramp. The usual location was closed due to all the festivities scheduled for tonight. Being a holiday, this park does it up big each year for the two holidays!

We fished hard all day and never really got into a great bite. The water was still suffering from all the wind a couple of days back ant the rains from yesterday. It was total mud in most areas we fished! They did however land some nice fish and had a good time fishing under the comfort of a roof. The Bimini top really came in handy today!

The Switch Out

Joey and George hit the water with me this morning and had a great time catching all kinds of fish. We trolled up both pike & walleye but the bite was a little slow by my standards! Water temps had fallen, again and were now 63 degrees. Add to that the electrical storm that had passed through a few hours before and I knew I had my work cut out for me. Many short strikers and several fish just falling off in the net too! Despite all of this, they still managed to land many fish before I switched out one of the passengers. I traded Joey for his sister KD at a dock nearby and continued the afternoon trolling bite.

Similar fishing was had but once the winds kicked up the bite slowed. We covered plenty of water and managed a bunch more fish, both walleye and pike. The cross winds blowing from the SE were making it difficult but I stuck it out until the end. I knew that the run back in these winds weren’t going to be fun. They were gusting over 40km and were big! With everything put away or strapped down, we made our way across the ocean, completely dry. The last half mile was the worst with 3 to 4 foot rollers and we were going with them. I trimmed up and practically surfed them all the way back where I was lucky enough to have my trailer waiting. Don was given a set of keys in the morning and backed the boat trailer into the water so that all I had to do was drive the boat right on. Good thing too as there were massive waves where I would have needed to tie up!

Despite the big winds, we were able to complete the day and catch a bunch of fish. KD was even taking several walleye back with her for her father, who had organized this whole trip. He also dropped her off at a pick up place mid-day so that we could do the switch. Overall, it was a great day for fishing!

Rick & Danny stared with a bang today as Rick managed to land his personal best musky, only minutes after we began. They also boated plenty of smallies throughout the day as well as a few walleye and other species too. We had decided not to troll and they casted for everything! Finally, a day without big winds!

Giant North West Winds

Louis and his party of four joined me this morning for an excellent 4 hours of fishing. It was nonstop action as we trolled up plenty of fish in the time we were out. Unfavourable winds out of the NW had us fishing in big waves all morning and the run back to pick up my afternoon guys wasn’t pleasant either. I had contemplated on fishing elsewhere for the remainder of the day but decided otherwise once we did the switch!

Butch & Marty spent their time landing many more fish as they both boated plenty of quality pike & walleye. Unfortunately the conditions hadn’t changed and we trolled in big wind and waves the entire time. Oh well, at least the fish were biting!

Rock & Roll

Maryse and Steph picked a not so perfect day to join me for fishing today. Giant winds out of the west had me settling for an area to start. Running to it wasn’t pretty either as the waves were easily 3 footers!

We spent all morning scouring different sections and managed to pick at the fish pretty good, despite the unfavourable conditions. Sometime early afternoon we switched from a troll and I had them casting for smallies. They had plenty of chances and managed to land a good number of average sized bass.

Our run back at the end of the day was less than pleasant once again and I think it was even worse than the morning. We were going with the wind and the rollers were pretty big! We managed to make it back and stay dry and that’s all that counted on this not so nice day. At least it was warm and sunny!
