Quebec Fishing Reports
Refining Techniquesoctobre 31, 2024
Craig & herm were with me today and we headed to another body of water to fish. The winds were going to be big and there would be no way we were getting out on the local waters. Another road trip was definitely on the agenda today!
Our first stop had them both tossing blades over shallow water in search of a few aggressive bass. Too bad the fish didn’t know as Craig got the only bite and it didn’t hook up. I slid out to the deeper edge and it was here that Herm finally broke the ice with a small bass. Craig soon followed, but his fish was considerably larger. We finally had the first big fish of the day! Too bad it was the only one!
I changed areas and presentations on the next location and they both began hooking up. Although not all big fish, the numbers were definitely better now. A mix of fish were coming board, but the fish were still not very aggressive. Many short strikes occurred and plenty of missed fish were seen. Herm did however hook into a big fish that may have been taken away by an even bigger predator when he broke off. The line actually was a clean cut that led me to believe that it was caused by a toothy critter!
We covered plenty of water and they continued to catch many more bass throughout the afternoon. A few moves were made with some minor adjustments and Herm finally locked up on a real giant. We took precautions to ensure that it made it to the net and he was soon rewarded with the biggest fish of the day. Plenty of pics were taken and she was released unharmed.
We spent the remainder of the afternoon working hard to get bit and they were rewarded several more times before we were done. Nothing came easy today but by refining the techniques, they were able to catch plenty of good, quality bass. Big winds had caused us to travel to these waters and based on tomorrow’s forecast, we may be back again. Craig & Herm are with me for the second day and I only hope they fend as well as they did today. Only time will tell!!
The Deep Freezeoctobre 29, 2024
Well, we finally had a break in the weather with the winds. but overnight a deep freeze came in and sent us into the negatives. It was definitely a chilly start to the day as we headed on the water. I thought I’d try something new, to see if the walleye were setting up in an area that produces, when the weather gets colder in the fall.
Rick & Danny began the troll along a weed edge and it didn’t take long for one of them to hook up. Rick was into a pretty good fish, but after about a minute, it came unpinned and we never got to know how big it actually was. Based on the weight, it was a good one! After covering water with only one more hit and no fish, I decided to leave the area and go elsewhere for bass.
We began casting a shoal that had been producing good the last couple of weeks but only came up with one decent bass bite. A slight adjustment in locations had Danny into one of the better fish of the day and a few others followed too. They both managed to get fish from here, but not many. We covered plenty of water and were unsuccessful all around the area. Time for a move!
I headed to another transitional spot and Rick was the first to lock up. His fish was a really good one and made it into the net for a few pics. Soon after he was tight to another really good one as well and things were looking up for this spot! Danny got into the game too, but he had actually locked up on a sturgeon. This was the second time this fall that one of these dinosaurs had actually taken a dropshot! It’s amazing how well they fight on light tackle and 5 minutes later, it was in the net. Several more good bass also followed before we were done here and they too were big. It may not have given up a load of fish but they were good ones!
The rest of the afternoon saw a few more fish taken from the other areas we fished. Our last location had a pile of walleye that were unwilling to bite as we saw on the sonar. The flat calm along with bluebird skies had them pressed to the bottom not wanting to bite. Danny was the only one that managed to entice one of them into eating before we were done.
Today was a little tougher than the last couple but the fish were all quality. I think the big blow from the last two days, along with the deep freeze overnight, had them a little slower to recover. Another heatwave is coming this week and who knows how the fish will be reacting this time. I know the warmth will be a welcomed treat after this chilly fall day. Hopefully it will fire them up!!
An Even Bigger Blowoctobre 28, 2024
Another windy day today and another body of water to fish! Rick & Danny endured the big winds again today so a road trip was in order, just so we could fish. They were gusting over 60 km per hour at times, from the west, making fishing quite difficult. Danny started out with his largest fish on the first cast and ended it with another on the very last. Rick had big fish of the day with the largest smallie and at the very end, a really good-sized pike. Everything in between consisted of plenty of other medium sized fish, but not worthy of pics. Today was a good day to test out the batteries for the electric motor, as it was working hard in the big winds. All things considered, they both made out quite well, catching plenty of fish once again!!
The Back Up Planoctobre 27, 2024
I had to fish a different place today due to the extremely high winds. They were gusting at over 45 km per hour at times and the usual place would have been impossible to fish. Frank & his son Nick were willing to take the drive and were rewarded in spades! They boated so many bass that there was very little down time! Frank even managed to catch his personal best bass along with many others. Despite the cold temps from the blowing winds, they fended quite well and ended with a bang. Our last stop saw numbers of bass landed by both on almost very cast for a while. Great decision to take a road trip today!
A Tough Sturgeon Biteoctobre 26, 2024
Tough day on the water fishing sturgeon today, with Adam and his friends. Only a couple of small fish landed and plenty of searching all over the lake for them. At least the weather was great!!
