Today I decided to fish with my brother as I had the day off and he needed a break from work. We hit the water leisurely around 8:30 in search of bass. Big bass to be exact! I set him up with a blade bait and we began covering water, looking for a beast. Many casts later and not expecting anything, Mike got crushed by a good one. We’re still not sure what happened but it went to the air and threw the hooks immediately after. To make matters worse, it was the one he was looking for! With only having one good bite in the water we had covered, I decided to change locations & technique.

I pulled into another area and had him work it slowly, looking for the inactive fish. It didn’t take long before he got bit and was landing decent sized fish. He may have lost plenty but once he understood the technique, he began to boat more than he lost. He hooked into so many that I decided to fish as well. Big mistake as I nailed a bunch of the ones he had hoped to catch. Not a problem as I knew where there were more!

I shifted locations and worked specific areas allowing him to cover the best water and it finally happened. He hooked into what looked like an absolute monster and was sure it was his personal best. I needed to get this one in the boat and actually went after it, in the current. When I got a chance with the net, I took it and the fish was his. It was definitely bigger than any bass he had ever caught and well worth several pics before being released. We headed back to where he had hooked into his fish and covered the area more thoroughly. Plenty more fish were landed and some of them came close to his previous PB. Along with the great fishing were many good laughs. So much so that we actually lost track of the time. Before we knew it, it was almost 4:00 and time to go. I wanted to try one more area and technique before we left and spent the last 15 minutes working on getting a couple more fish.

I moved out much deeper and instructed him on what to do here as we moved along. I had a couple of bass on but unfortunately they came unpinned while fighting. Mike got nailed soon after and hooked into something big. Thoughts of another PB entered my mind but when it neared the boat, I realized it was an eye. A good walleye at that! I slid the net under another personal best for him and ended the day. If we had of had more time, I would have tried for a pike or musky in order to give him a slam for the day. Either way, it was a great fish and several pics were shot before releasing it back.

We ended on a high and packed up, heading back to take out. It was nice spending time together while fishing again and catching all the fish we did was just a bonus. I’m sure he won’t forget this one for a while as he boated more quality today than he had all year combined on his own. Good times with family and great fishing was had by all today!

Had to cancel a sturgeon trip today due to it being a little too breezy! Giant winds out of the SE created an ocean on the lake and the boat ramp looked more like one of those manmade surfing rides at a water park. Needless to say, it was a unanimous decision! Back out again soon, I hope!

Sam, Steph and Phil joined me today for another incredible, action packed outing! Although we started later than usual, they still got the job done! Steph began the day with the first hookup and the others follow almost immediately. In the beginning, they were having a hard time keeping the fish pinned, but with a little coaching, they started bringing more bass to the net.

The weather wasn’t too hard to take either, with sunshine and 70 plus degrees throughout the day. I wish I had of brought sandals and shorts! Unfortunately I think everyone had the same idea as there were almost as many boats on the water as there was this past weekend. Must have been a whole lot of people calling in sick today!

Our morning, as short as it was, put a great number of big bass in the boat and I thought the afternoon would be even better. Unfortunately, the fish seemed to be short striking baits and many more fish were missed or lost again. They did rally back in the end though and put a beating on them in the last couple of hours. Although everyone managed big fish, it was Sam that won in the end with the two biggest fish of the day.

We finally called the day around 4:00 and headed back to take out. They had wanted to have a great day of fishing and they definitely had that. High numbers and some real quality fish were boated today! With the weather so mild this fall it wouldn’t surprise me if I’m able to stay on the water right into December again this season. Plenty more great days, still ahead!

Glen, Todd & Fraser joined me today hoping for a few dinosaurs. Glen had been here a couple of times last fall and knew just what to expect! They all wanted bigger and more! We wasted no time and headed on the water at 7:30 in anticipation of our first bite.

Air temps were comfortable for the run and expected to climb into the low 70’s by afternoon. Definitely not your typical October day, but we’ll take it! After the anchor was set, I prepped all the rods and the wait began. A couple of missed hits later, I was setting into the first fish. I had to get the skunk out of the boat so I grabbed the rod when the fish bit. Frazer had the first one and he brought a juvenile sturgeon to the boat, but needed a pic regardless. I reset the lines and hoped for a bigger bite next!

Our first several fish were all small but eventually, Fraser reared back on a heavy one and I told him it was big. He was about to feel what the adults were like! His fish even took to the air and now he knew exactly what he was dealing with. The battle lasted more than ten minutes before I was able to net his catch. Although not really a giant, it was definitely a good one and his largest ever! We shot several pics and released it quickly afterwards. Back to business~

Glen was up next and when his time came, he set into another heavy weight. Although not his personal best, it was still a really good fish. Several runs and a jump later, I was able to get it in the net for a few photos as well. Back she went and we did too. I reset all the lines once again hoping to get Todd another of the large ones but all he could manage were small & medium when his turn arrived. Glen on the other hand set into a good fish when his turn came up and battled another large one for almost ten minutes. Todd just couldn’t catch a break! Glen on the other hand was taking advantage of the rotation and loving the fact that his was not a baby. As luck would have it, this one turned out to be big fish of the day! She was released after a few more shots and we regrouped and readied for the next bite.

Todd was finally up again and when he set into the next fish, it acted a little strange. It wasn’t fighting like a sturgeon and when he brought it to the boat we realized why. He had hooked into a big channel cat and it was ugly! I netted it regardless and snapped off a few pics while he held it with the boga. He didn’t want to touch it! We let the beauty go and got right back to business.

The remainder of the afternoon only saw small & medium fish coming aboard and by 4:00 we pulled the plug on this day. We will be right back at it again tomorrow and hopefully a few of those monsters will find their way to our lines. Although plenty of fish were landed today, I always want more and bigger. Who knows, maybe tomorrow will see the personal best for the boat. It’s a tough number to beat, but I think it’s doable. I know they’d love to try!
