A Lethargic Bite

Aurelien & his son Hector accompanied me today, all the way from Madrid. They were here on vacation and had 2 weeks scheduled locally. A passion for fishing led them to me and I didn’t want to disappoint. We began with a troll, after making a long run to our first spot. Conditions were flat calm and temps were already quite hot when I set the lines in search of pike & walleye. Hopefully, the fish would cooperate!
It didn’t tale too long to get into the first fish and Hector brought a good keeper to the net. His second fish also came in fast and we now had a couple of nice walleye in the livewell for them to dine on tonight. Not long after, his third walleye had other ideas and came off on the way to the boat. Too bad too, as this was one worthy of a photo!
We spent several hours covering water and I was seeing a pattern with the fish, as more of them were being lost or falling off in the net. Pike and walleye were coming unpinned and this was very strange. The fish just weren’t very active! Eventually after the third walleye hit the box, we decided to switch to another species, but not before Aurelien finally landed a big enough walleye for a pic. They had caught both pike and walleye but I believe more fish were lost than landed!
Bass was the next targeted species and they managed to catch several in the first area we hit. We even added another good walleye to the tank for a total of 4 for them to take home. I moved around a couple of times and both Hector & his father enjoyed catching plenty of bass from each spot before we were done.
As this was just the start of their vacation, they will be doing more fishing on their own from Kayaks. The place they are staying had a couple of them and they are right on the water. Hopefully they will get into more fish on their vacation and learn from some of the techniques they used today. I’m sure they will have a great two weeks here in Montreal chasing Canadian fish!!
