A Competitive DayMay 24, 2005
I fished with Richard, Dax & Andrew today on Memphremagog and had a great day for numbers. The wind was from the E/NE at 15 to 25 MPH making the morning air seem colder than it really was. Air temps were in the upper 40’s and the water temps were around 51 degrees in the shallows. Fortunately, the rain that was forecasted for the day never happened. For the first time in over a week, I was fishing in cloud & sunshine! Over 100 smallmouth bass were landed and many others lost with an added lake trout as a bonus. A competition brewed as Andrew & Dax went into overtime to only have Andrew take a 35 to 34 win over his brother Dax in the end. All in all a great day on the water and no one got hurt!!!
Feeling Like A FishMay 23, 2005
I fished with Mike today on Memphremagog and approximately 25 bass were caught up to 3.5 pounds. The weather wasn’t any better today either. The morning air was a balmy 43 degrees and didn’t get much warmer through the day. It was a steady drizzle and the wind was from the E/NE at 10 to 15 MPH all day long. The warmest water was definitely offshore. We found 53 degrees on the open water shoals and 51 degrees in the shallows. Even the fish were not very cooperative as we got into most of them over 20 to 30 feet of water. Once again, fin-s jigs and jerk-baits accounted for all the smallmouth bass. The day was called a little earlier when I took a rotating excalibur hook in the thumb from one of the jerk-baits. Now I know what a fish feels like!
Mother Nature’s MiseryMay 22, 2005
I fished with Tim & Christiane today on another lake for trophy sized smallmouth bass. The weather wasn’t going to cooperate once more! We had a steady drizzle with intermittent showers and cold N/NE winds of 10 to 15 MPH. The water temps were holding around 44 to 45 degrees and another cold front was upon us again. To say the fishing was slow would have been an understatement! Christiane was the only one to land a bass on a jerk-bait. I had a few hits and some follows, but only got into one big fish and lost it after about 5 seconds. I know it was another lunker! By 1:30 we had had enough and decided to call it quits. I should have opted for Memphremagog on this miserable day, but thought we could get some more trophies like we did a couple of days before. I wish mother nature would be more pleasant.
Anniversary DayMay 21, 2005
I fished with my wife, Christiane today on our 20th anniversary weekend fishing trip. Well, the weather held out, contrary to the forecast and that was a blessing. The air temps were in the upper 50’s and the water was as high as 52 degrees. The wind was still from the N/NE at 10 to 20 MPH by the days end, but that didn’t change the fishing. Our starting spot produced close to 50 fish and it continued at the same rate for the rest of the day as well. By the time it was all over there were more than 100 smallmouth bass up to 4.5 pounds caught & released. Both the jerk-baits and the jigs worked equally as well. Most of the fish were in the 20 to 30 foot range. The cold fronts seemed to send them deeper! Overall, the best day of the year!!
A Quality BiteMay 20, 2005
I fished with Tim again today, but on another lake. We knew that we wouldn’t be catching a lot of bass, but they would be huge. The air temps went to almost 60 degrees and the water temps were about 48 degrees. We had light winds from the N/NE with sun & clouds. Only about 12 bass were caught but most were in the 5-pound class. The largest weighed in at 6 pounds 8 ounces on a scale. There were also fish of 5.14, 5.11, 5.7, 5.4, and 5.3, respectively. We even managed to get a couple of bonus fish. One lake trout of 4.5 pounds and a beautiful brown of 7 pounds. All in all, a great fishing day for quality fish!!
