Getting It Done
October 8, 2024
Peter and a couple of his friends were with me this morning in hopes of getting into some sturgeon. I knew that the winds would be a problem, but decided to give it a try regardless. This was the only day that Pat and Herb were able to join and it was a unanimous decision to head out and try.
I had checked lots of water in search of schooling fish, without good results. What I had been on only a few days earlier didn’t seem to be around. Eventually I settled on one place that seemed loaded with fish. It was in much deeper water but the sonar looked great. As bad luck would have it, they turned out to be catfish and after landing a few, I decided to leave. We would switch it up to a different species instead!
The winds were building when we arrived, but we were all in. We were going to drift the flat and see if we could hook into a few walleye. They all dropshotted and we made multiple drifts, picking at some decent fish. Along with the Walters, there were a few big perch caught as well. The winds were moving us along quickly and the drifts were shorter than I would have liked, but at least they were catching fish!
Time passed quickly this morning and before we knew it, it was time to head back. Just as well too because a couple of them were feeling the cold. It wasn’t summer anymore!
We may not have caught the targeted species, but plan B definitely worked out well. By having a fall back with the walleye, they were able to salvage the day with some pretty nice fish. The winds were definitely not in our favor as Mother Nature was back to her nasty self today. Hopefully tomorrow will be better!!
