Herm was here for a couple of days and as usual, the weather wasn’t looking good for day one! I had a decision to make and made it in the morning as we were on the water. We would be fishing walleye until we could fish no more!

He had brought along an ultra-light and decided to give it a try. I rigged him up with a drop shot and we began drifting over some deep flats. I wasn’t sure how much time we would have before the weather moved in and wanted to get him into as many fish as I could.

On the very first pass, he had a walleye on and it fought like a champ, on this light tackle. It brought me back to my younger days when this was all I used as well. Each time he hooked into a fish, it seemed like a real giant! At one point though, he did hook a much bigger one than we had been catching and this one really put up a battle. A nice 23 inch fish eventually was in the net and it definitely required a pic!

We were able to fish comfortably for a couple of hours and caught plenty of good walleye. The bites may have been light but we managed to hook a good number of fish. At least until the winds started to change.

I had been drifting a line and then noticed that the line wasn’t straight anymore. Our SW winds were turning west and eventually went NW. Along with the change, we were also getting hit with a bunch of rain as well. I didn’t know how much longer we had before I’d be pulling the plug!

Although we were still fishing, the wind gusts and heavy rains were upon us and feeling any bites was getting next to impossible. We managed to land a couple more before it became too bad and I had no choice but to call it a day. I even had to run back by GPS as visibility was almost completely gone. The shoreline had disappeared with the heavy rains and I needed to be behind the windshield anyway!

As much as I would have loved to stay out the conditions weren’t in our favour and we pulled off the water. I had at least gotten Herm into a bunch of walleye and even a smallie, in the few short hours we spent fishing. We even managed to keep a few of the keepers that were caught! Tomorrow we will try for the big ones and with any luck, Herm will battle a few of those beasts too. He won’t be using the light tackle this time however!
